A Grandparent’s Prayer for their Grandchildren

No one enters this life a follower of Christ. If we are God’s children it is because we were born spiritually sometime after we were born physically. I like how Crawford Loritts says it: “We have grandchildren but God only has children.” Your grandchildren need to have their own personal relationship with God through Christ. God uses our prayers as one of the means of drawing people, including our grandchildren, to himself.

We all know this and, in this post, I want to focus on how you can pray intentionally for your grandchildren’s salvation. I want to teach a set of prayers for your grandchildren to help you pray in a way that will help your grandchildren see and savor the beauty of Jesus personally.

Grandparent’s Prayer for Their Grandchildren: 3 Great Prayer Strategies

Grandparent’s Prayer #1 Strategy: Know the Gospel

A great place to start praying for your grandchildren is making sure you understand the key components of the Gospel and beginning to pray through each one of these components.

There are lots of great resources available to help you understand the Gospel more fully and share it with your grandchildren. Two that I want to specifically recommend are Everystudent.com and Dare 2 Share.

Everystudent.com’s motto is “A Safe Place to Explore Questions About Life and God” and it serves as just that.

Dare 2 Share, a ministry that equips students to share their faith, has a wealth of great resources on their website and mobile apps, which are incredibly helpful in understanding and sharing the Gospel. Their Life in 6 Words G.O.S.P.E.L. approach has helped me and countless others gain understanding in the straightforward message of the Gospel.

Lastly, Greg Stier, president of Dare 2 Share, has written a 40-day devotional that is very helpful in understanding the Gospel more fully.

I encourage you to hover over each aspect of the G.O.S.P.E.L. Let each truth sink deeply into your heart and mind so that you feel the weight of it: the God who created you to be with him; the tragedy of how your sin separates us from God; the hopelessness of trying to be good enough to remove your sin; the amazing love and sacrifice of Jesus who paid the price for our sin by his death and resurrection; the inexpressible joy that all who trust in Jesus for salvation have eternal life; the unwavering hope that life with Jesus starts the moment you place your trust in him and never ends. Begin to pray these prayers for your grandchildren so that they would know and embrace the Gospel.

Pray for your Grandchildren with Strategy #2: Prepare the Soil

The Bible is a story of redemption from the first pages of Genesis to the end of Revelation. God gives us behind-the-scenes sneak peeks throughout the Bible into how he redeems people and draws them to himself.

The five passages listed in this section are some that I’ve come across over the years that are instrumental in how I pray for those who do not yet have a relationship with Jesus Christ.

This is definitely not a complete list of passages, but it’s a great initial set of grandparent’s prayers for their grandchildren.

Feel free to add to them and create your own more extensive list, as you pray for your grandchildren and others in your life who don’t know Christ.

Give Them Eyes to See

In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.  For what we proclaim is not ourselves. But Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.  For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 4:4-6).

Draw Them

No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day (John 6:44).

Make Them Alive

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins…But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved… (Ephesians 2:1, 4-5)

Give them the Gift of Faith

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Help them Repent

Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?” (Romans 2:4)

Grandparent’s Prayer for Their Grandchildren Strategy #3: Pray The 7 Essentials with a Salvation Slant

This third strategy is simple. Use a Pray for Me Prayer Guide as an effective daily tool in praying for your grandchildren or those in your world who don’t know Christ.

The prayers are already deeply rooted in the Gospel and our need for Christ in all things, so praying through The 7 Essentials for your grandchildren who don’t know Christ will only require you to adjust your thinking a little.

Praying for your grandchildren’s salvation is one of the most important things you can do for them. It is amazing that God chooses to use your prayers as one of the means of helping your grandchildren come to know him personally.

  • I humbly ask fir prayers fir my grand daughter. She doesn’t even want to know me. I don’t know why. I’ve never done anything to hurt her. She listens to the wickedness of others. I know we wrestle not against flesh and blood but principalities and wicked powers. I pray my grand daughter heart is open to JESUS then and only then can we have a relationship. She doesn’t understand how much I love her. I tell her JESUS loves her so much more. She said she doesn’t want anything to do with me or this side of our family. The pain is real🩷🙏🙏🩷✝️🕊️🙌
