Prayer for Favor
Praying through the 7 Essentials simply means praying the truths of scripture over the needs of the next generation or others close to you, using the lens of the 7 Essentials.
Today’s spotlight is on the Praying for Favor from God. We’re starting with favor because it really is the foundation for all of the other Essentials.
There is no aspect of our lives that is not touched by the favor of God. God’s favor is all encompassing!
Acts 17:28 and Romans 11:36 give us a small glimpse into this when the authors wrote:
“In him we live and move and have our being.” Acts 17:28 (ESV)
“For from him and through him are all things.” Romans 11:36 (ESV)
It can’t be overstated; no aspect of our lives goes untouched by the overwhelming favor of God.
God’s favor provides the beating of our hearts, the breath in our lungs. It is the giggling joy of a small child being tossed in the air by her loving parent. God’s favor doesn’t stop there; it is also forgiveness, repentance and faith. It is love, joy, peace, patience and the other fruits of the spirit.
When we are praying for God’s favor, we are asking God to lavish his specific favor over specific needs.
So what does this look like in real time? It’s a process! Consider with me these four steps.
Step One for Praying for Favor
Identify a need. For example, the person you are praying for said they are struggling with anxiety.
Step Two: Prayer for Favor
Determine what aspect of the favor of God addresses that need: The Peace of God
Step Three when Praying for Favor
Determine a passage of Scripture represents that aspect of God’s favor:
“Now may the Lord himself give you peace at all times in every way.” 2 Thessalonians 3:16
Step four: Prayer for Favor
Turn that passage into a prayer:
Father, you are the Lord of peace and we pray that you would help us to know your peace and presence at all times and in every way. Cause your favor to rest on us today. Help us to surrender all our anxiety and fears to you, that we may know your peace surpasses all understanding. Strengthen us to be your people of peace, so that our lives would point our friends, neighbors and communities to you. We pray this for your glory and our good, in the name of the Prince of Peace, Jesus, amen.
